Who we are
My name is Mike and I ma the owner of Otto’s Bakehouse. I got started baking pretty early. My big Christmas gift when I was 12 was the “Betty Crocker” bake book. In just a few months, I talked the owner of the famous Marker’s Bakery in Upper Montclair, NJ to take me on as a “free” apprentice.
Mr. Marker taught me how to make authentic Danish and the sugar frosting roses you see on fancy wedding cakes. With my cake decorating skills, I used a cake I decorated to convince my eighth grade shop teacher to give me a job working in his side business as a wedding caterer. He taught me how to bake desserts for up to 300 people.
Over the years, I switched careers several times, but kept learning more and more about the craft of baking from master bakers in America, Italy, Germany, Austria and France. I recently returned from living with my family in Germany for two years, where we could ride our bikes across the borders of France and Switzerland to sample amazing baked goods.
